For decades now, Gretna Green has been a hugely popular wedding destination which stems from the romantic wedding traditions dating back over centuries, which originated from cross-border elopements stemming from the freedom available in Scottish marriage laws compared to those in surrounding countries.
It is thought to have been a direct response to Lord Hardwicke’s Marriage Act being applied in England, meaning that if the parent of a person under the age of 21 objected to a union, the union would be vetoed. Shortly after, the construction of a toll road made Gretna Green the easiest village to access over the Scottish border and so many young couples would travel to Gretna Green to be wed away from parental disapproval.
Since then, 1000s of couples still travel from all over the world to be married in such a traditional setting. But with the invention of modern roads and transport, couples are branching out to the Isle of Skye. Its stunning and dramatic backdrops and friendly locals are making it the island for elopements. Perfect for couples looking for a low-key wedding with a natural aesthetic.
But even with today’s modern technology, it can be difficult and time-consuming to plan a wedding on an island you’ve never been to before, or where you don’t know the local businesses. That’s why we’ve decided to remove the web-searching for you.
For the past month, we have been researching and creating our ‘Definitive Guide to Getting Married on Skye.’ It is a short film which includes everything you need to know about getting married on Skye. As locals to the island, we know the ins and outs of every business available to you and the ins and outs of the island – like the weather.
For free, we offer you a short chapter on the weather and if you like it, you can purchase our full version. Alongside this, you gain full access to our website which has a directory for all the links you may need for planning your big day. The subscription lasts for six months and you can opt in if you wish to renew it.
