How can I Market my Explainer Video?

You’ve just spent some of your marketing budgets on a shiny new explainer video and everyone in the company loves it. But, what are you going to do with it? What are your options?

Worry not because there are plenty of places your video will feel at home. This is why we have put this blog together, to assure you that your explainer video production process wasn’t a waste.

Your Website

Now, if your explainer video is to be used to increase sales, don’t hide it away on the about us page or anywhere else for that matter. It should be above the fold of the homepage, with no exceptions.

After giving this advice I always get hit with these types of questions; “Can I get away with it below the fold?” No. Put it above the fold. “I was only going to put it on YouTube” That will help increase traffic. But also embed it on your homepage, above the fold. “Our homepage has a nice image so I was going to ask our web developer to add it to our products page instead” Move the image somewhere else, and put your explainer above the fold on the homepage. “I think it’s better…” You guessed it; homepage, above the fold.

Now that we’ve established a location, all you need to do is to decide whether you want to host yourself or use another platform. We recommend using a professional service like Wisitia, YouTube or Vimeo. Hosting yourself can open up a can of worms. Let the professionals do what they do best. All you need to do is copy and paste an embed code onto your website and the video will appear; thumbnail, controls and any call to action.

YouTube

YouTube isn’t just a player or a place to get lost for a few hours. It’s actually the world’s number 2 search engine. It’s all about the thumbnail, video title description and content. YouTube uses speech recognition software to automatically generate closed captions for your video. This is great for the hard of hearing but also great for being found. All words said in your video are indexed on Google.

Explainer video production isn’t the easiest thing to do. This means I will often search for ways to do things. For example, last month I searched how to keyframe inverse kinematics and forward kinematics, and I wanted a lady to walk along to a hat stand, pick up a hat and put it on. Sounds simple right? Yes, if you know how to. Thanks to a Google search, I found a video that explained the process. It even automatically started the video at the correct point. Genius.

Social Platforms

These include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. All the usual suspects really. Just now these sites are using hashtags for people to find videos. Hashtags are still very useful because you can pinpoint what your video is about so you’re found for the right thing. It’s nice to have lots of views but what is better than having lots of views is having the right type of viewer. Someone in the market for your product is who you want watching your explainer.

Whilst there are a few other websites you can upload your video to, the must do’s are listed above. These are the places you must have your explainer. Everywhere else is just a bonus.

So, before I finish I feel a reminder is needed. After a fulfilling explainer video production process, the best place for your new video is the homepage, above the fold. Do not hesitate to get in touch with us, if an explainer video is something you need for your business.
