After Effects is filled with tonnes of features. As a self taught motion graphics designer I've been spending a lot of time watching after effects tutorials. From complex animations to the simplest of things everything I have learned is from a video walkthrough.

So, if you're looking to take your skills to the next level and create stunning visual effects and animations, then you've come to the right place. As you may already know, Adobe After Effects is a powerful tool for video editing and motion graphics, but it can also be quite overwhelming for beginners. That's why we've put together some expert tips and tricks to help you make the most out of After Effects tutorials, including the use of keyboard shortcuts. So, let's dive in and unlock the full potential of this amazing software!

Understanding the Basics of Adobe After Effects

Adobe After Effects is a powerful software that allows users to create stunning visual effects and animations. However, for complete beginners, it can be overwhelming to navigate through its various features and capabilities. In this section, we will provide you with a comprehensive guide to understanding the basics of Adobe After Effects.

Firstly, let's start with the composition settings. When you first open After Effects, you will be prompted to create a new composition. This is where you can adjust the size, duration, and frame rate of your project. It is important to set these parameters correctly to ensure that your animation or video will display properly. One extra tip is to adjust the colour bit depth to 16bits as this will stop any of that nasty banding.

Next, let's explore shape layers. Shape layers are a fundamental aspect of After Effects and are used to create and manipulate various shapes, such as rectangles, circles, and polygons. By combining shape layers with keyframe animation, you can create complex motion graphics and visual effects. Try to animate using shape layers if you can. I started off using AI layers which was fine but to have complete control you have to use shape layers. This is where the plugin Overlord comes in useful. I have to say that's it's the most useful plugin I've used to date.

Moving on to character animation, After Effects offers a wide range of tools and techniques for animating characters. From rigging and parenting to using the puppet pin tool, there are plenty of options to bring your characters to life. Again, plugins help. You can animate these manually but plugins are powerful tools and can't be underestimated. This is where Limber comes in. It will always be a time consuming process animating key frames but Limber does make it easier by joining elements together and making it movement look natural.

Lastly, let's discuss some essential tips for working with After Effects. It is important to organise your project using folders and labels, as this will make it easier to locate and modify assets. Trust me, if you don't it's a nightmare. And don't be shy about creating multiple files if you are working on edits. That means you can always go back a version! Additionally, learning keyboard shortcuts can greatly improve your workflow and save you valuable time. With these helpful tips and step-by-step instructions, you will be well on your way to mastering Adobe After Effects.
